In fact, a recent survey indicated that over 91% of all personal computers world wide were infected with spyware.
Where Does It Come From? Spyware is downloaded to your computer from the Internet, totally without your knowledge, and then tracks your computer usage in various ways. It will keep a record of your Internet surfing and it may track your buying habits. Some versions will even record your every keystroke, thereby revealing the contents of every email you send and every letter you write, as well as what software you are using and what Internet addresses you are visiting.
\"We are permanently connected to the Internet and the protection and confidentiality of our information are vital,\" said Phil Lancaster, IT Director of Next Chapter, a company specializing in Internet software, \"but what really brought home to me the insidious nature of these parasites was the discovery of 97 of them on the computer used at home by my wife and teenage daughter. The thought that some outsider\'s software could be snooping on my 14 year old daughter\'s computer usage as she researches the Internet for a school project or chats on-line with her friends is utterly abhorrent to me.\"
\"Spyware and adware parasites are not detected by anti-virus software, and a firewall will not keep them out,\" continued Mr Lancaster, \"Even if you find one, and manage to delete it totally, there may be dozens of others still operating. And there\'s no guarantee you won\'t be reinfected tomorrow anyway.\"
Protection, fortunately, is available. Some is free, but fairly complex to use, and there\'s no guarantee that it\'s up to date. Like most things in life, you get what you pay for, and in the long run you\'re better off buying a good commercial strength product backed up by a continually updated database. \"One of the frightening things our research showed,\" said Mr Lancaster, \"was that there were some products, both free and paid for, that were in fact spyware themselves masquerading as anti-spyware. Running them will certainly eliminate their competitors\' spyware and adware, but at the expense of being reinfected with a new batch. A bit like catching the flu to get rid of a cold.
